BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio — A fire at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School has forced the district to cancel classes on Friday.

“Due to extensive cleaning and air quality testing that must be completed prior to occupancy, Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School will be CLOSED on Friday, May 18, 2012. This action is necessary following a fire on Thursday afternoon in the wood shop,” a statement read on the school’s website.

The Broadview Heights Fire Department was called to the school at approximately 4:15 p.m. Thursday. Chief Jeff Hajek described the fire as being small, put out by a sprinkler system within minutes.

Students were evacuated from the school once the fire alarm was triggered and no one was hurt.

Hajek said the school had significant smoke damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Meanwhile, school officials say no one is allowed in the building without permission. All prom activities will take place as scheduled this weekend. Those involved in extracurricular activities should wait for direction from their coaches or advisors.
