“When you walk across this, when we’ve got a snowstorm going on outside, it feels like you are right in the middle of a snow globe and it’s just absolutely beautiful,” said Jaime Brown with the Horseshoe Casino.
Workers at the casino were busy putting the finishing touches on the new glass-enclosed skywalk Monday morning for their grand opening on New Year’s Eve.
Players will soon be able to park their cars in the casino’s main garage then take the skywalk into the Horseshoe.
“What we are trying to do is give everyone another option on their way into the casino; so you can walk the lovely streets of Cleveland or come right across the skywalk bridge and protect yourself from the elements,” Brown said.
It took four months to complete the casino project. 80% of the 175-foot skywalk was built on the ground; then over one weekend, they lifted the structure into place over the intersection of Prospect and Ontario.
“I like it. It’s attractive. It adds to the town and atmosphere of what gambling is,” said Rusty Peake of Rogers.
The skywalk is opening up a week earlier than expected; it was supposed to open January 7, but now it’s opening up on Tuesday at noon just in time for New Year’s Eve.
And gamblers heading to the casino like the idea.
“It’s snowing like crazy out and I think it’s gonna be great. We don’t have to go outside and get snow, cold and everything, just go right in from the parking,” said Holly Sechrist of Stow.
Wally Warren sells hot dogs and gyros from his cart located right across the street from the Horseshoe Casino. Even though the skywalk will take away foot traffic, Warren said he’s not concerned.
“Nah, I’m not worried about business because everybody knows that I’m here all the time. It’s a great look for Cleveland,” Warren said.
