CLEVELAND – A seven-time lottery winner is sharing his secrets to success.
“Just by listening and watching this interview, [people are] gonna learn a couple of things,” said Richard Lustig to FOX 8 News via Skype from his home in Florida.
“I was like everybody else, I said – oh wow, the lottery! Buy a lot of tickets, win big money, you know, retire, whatever,” said Lustig, whose first grand prize was $10,000 from a scratch game. He went on to win a second, third and even a fourth prize.
“It was when I won my fourth grand prize when all of a sudden, duh, a light went off in my head,” said Lustig. “I said, you know, you’ve won four lottery grand prizes – no one’s ever done that – you’re doing something right, you’ve got a method!”
Richard went on to devise what he said are several game-winning methods that he writes about in his best-selling book, “Learn How to Increase Your Chances of Winning the Lottery.” He said his techniques don’t involve tricks or gimmicks, which many players often rely upon.
“Yes, [I scratch] sideways,” said one game player at Yorktown Service Plaza in Parma Heights. “It kinda helps and this is a good, lucky store. I come in here quite a bit.”
Many people also line up at the Shell gas station at Smith and Snow Roads in Cleveland, which has a reputation for selling winning tickets.
“I would get outta debt! To tell the truth, and semi-retire,” said the clerk, Betty Marquard. “I like working so I’d probably work a little bit so I keep moving! But I’d love to win!”
Lustig first rose to fame after his fifth grand prize when he wrote a pamphlet that contained some of his methods. In 2002, he hit it big when he won $842,000 on Mega Money, a ball game in Florida.
Out of seven total prizes, Lustig won on one scratch-off, two second-chance drawings, one Mega Money and three Fantasy Five games.
“So, my method works with all different kinds of games,” said Lustig. “Even as many times as I’ve proven my method is real, there’s still people out there that don’t believe me; they think I’m a rip-off artist or a scam artist or whatever.”
He won’t reveal all his secrets, but he shares a few tips for anyone looking to strike it rich.
“Do not buy quick picks,” said Lustig, who recommends picking numbers and sticking with them on a regular basis without ever missing a drawing.
“Just make sure you spread them out over the whole span of numbers that are available because if you’re only picking birthdays and anniversaries, well then all your numbers are going to be between 1 and 31 because the most days in any month is 31.”
Lustig also recommends buying a minimum of 10 scratch-off tickets from the same game in a row.
“If you do that, almost every single time you’re gonna find a winning ticket in there – most of the times, even two and sometimes three or even four winning tickets in that stretch of ten tickets in a row, you just increased your chances of winning!”
According to Lustig, every lottery player must set a budget and shouldn’t spend more than they can afford.
“I should play it more often but I always tend to come when the numbers are higher, you know it draws you in,” said Lisa Agresta from Middleburg Heights.
Lustig acknowledges that he’s trying to sell a book, but he stands by his methods. “My credibility is solid. It really does work.”
