Federal fugitive on the run for 52 days arrested in Akron

AKRON, Ohio- A man accused of threatening to kill three people was arrested Friday afternoon in Akron.

Richard Lawless was originally wanted for kidnapping and a probation violation when he attacked a man in Polk late last month, the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office said. According to police, Lawless said he would shoot officers so they would killed him, in order to avoid going back to prison.

U.S. Marshals took Lawless into custody on Statemill Road in the Portage Lakes area near Akron at about 3 p.m. He was unarmed at the time of his arrest.

According to the sheriff’s office, Lawless was on the run for 52 days following an interview by the Medina County Drug Task Force at his home near Polk. He traveled to West Virginia, Indiana and Utah. During a traffic stop on July 9, authorities arrested his girlfriend, but Lawless continue to evade police.

Charges are expected in Wayne and Medina counties.
