CLEVELAND– The man accused of making threats against the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown is now facing federal charges of threatening communications.

James Reardon, 20, of New Middletown, is already charged with telecommunications harassment and aggravated menacing.

New Middletown Police Chief Vince D’Egidio said a former friend of Reardon’s alerted police on Aug. 16 of the disturbing videos he was posting on Instagram. After reviewing the video, they contacted the FBI to help investigation.

The video, posted on Aug. 11, showed Reardon holding an assault rifle, according to FBI Special Agent in Charge Eric Smith. Smith said there was audio of gunshots, and sound effects of sirens and people screaming in the background.

The caption: “Police identified the Youngstown Jewish Family Community shooter as a local white nationalist Seamus O’Reardon.”

When authorities searched Reardon’s home, they found an AR-15 assault rifle, an MP-40 submachine gun, Nazi propaganda and a Hitler Youth knife, Smith said.

Local and state authorities thanked the person who came forward. They also emphasized, “See something, say something.”

“Now, the FBI would like to take this opportunity to remind the public to report suspicious behavior or suspicious postings that are observed online, particularly those involving threats,” Smith said. “No amount of information is too small for law enforcement to address.”

“All too often, subsequent investigations into mass shootings revealed individuals who knew the shooter were aware of his or her revealing threatening statements or that the posting the perpetrator had previously made were on their own concerning,” Smith said. “Innocent lives, maybe people you know, maybe your life, are at stake.”

Reardon is now in federal custody and will make his first appearance in court on Thursday.
