The Cleveland Division of Police said a driver going the wrong way on I-77 collided with another vehicle Wednesday morning.

The driver of the second vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, it happened around 4:30 a.m. Police said a 31-year-old Cleveland man entered the freeway heading the wrong way, driving a 2005 Kia Optima northbound in the southbound lanes.

The Kia collided head-on with a vehicle driven by 48-year-old Jack Dixon, of Eastlake. Dixon was pronounced dead at the scene. He was driving a 2008 Ford Escape.

The crash also caused a second crash with a third vehicle. The driver of that vehicle, a 2006 Chevy Tahoe, was treated for minor injuries.

Police said a Cleveland police cruiser was also struck, but no officers reported injuries.

All lanes of I-77 southbound were closed at I-490 for nearly five hours and reopened around 9 a.m.

The wrong-way driver was placed under arrest and taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for critical injuries.

Police said when he is released he will be taken to the Central Prison Unit and booked for aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault.

Alcohol was believed to be a factor pertaining to the suspect.  OVI charges are pending.

The first call reporting the accident was made at 4:12 a.m.

The initial collision caused a second crash with a third vehicle.  That driver was treated for minor injuries.

An officer was also struck at the scene but did not report any injuries.

Three cars were towed from the scene.
