When Katie Breland Hughes was paralyzed in a horrific car crash in 2011, she knew she had a long road ahead of her. But she was determined to walk some it.

According to Today, Hughes, 27, had missed a stop sign back and was hit by a truck. She went through the windshield and landed in a ditch, before her car landed on top of her — on fire — burning her back.

Hughes, a personal trainer and physical therapy assistant, was told she would never walk again. But she told Today that from the beginning, she vowed to forge ahead.

“I told my sister from the beginning, I will not get married — whoever it be to, or whenever it happens — I will not do it until I can walk down the aisle,” she told Today.  “I just won’t be in a wheelchair. So that was always a goal. I didn’t know the next year it would actually happen.”

She started working with a strength coach, and at the same time, met up with a former acquaintance. Three months later after they met, they were engaged, and the wedding was only nine months down the road.

She planned her wedding, bought a dress (after appearing on TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress”) and wore leg braces on her wedding day.

She walked down the aisle, holding the hands of her father and her coach, in September.
