Since American Idol’s premiere Wednesday night, the spotlight has been on the much-publicized feud between judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey.

But that all changed Thursday night when Lazaro Arbos stepped up for his audition — the last one of the night.

The 21-year-old got the panel’s attention quickly when he started to tell them about his background.

His severe stutter took over, prompting Carey to ask about it.

Arbos said he’s struggled with the speech impediment his whole life. It was so bad that no one wanted to play with him as a kid. With little friends around, he turned to music.

When it came time for him to sing, he soared through Bridge Over Trouble Water.

The stammer was nowhere to be found.
