Charges filed in death of man found shot in apartment building stairwell

ELYRIA, Ohio — Police have filed charges against the suspect in the murder of a man in Elyria Wednesday night.

According to Elyria police, Jeremy Diestler, 30, of Grafton, faces charges of aggravated murder and felonious assault in the case. He also faces charges of improperly discharging a firearm, tampering with evidence and improper handling of a firearm.

Police say Matthew Stinson, 25, was found slumped over on a bottom stairwell of an apartment building on Wesley Avenue at about 10:39 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female in the building was grazed in her left shoulder by a bullet when she left her apartment to investigate the gunshots, which she thought were fireworks. She refused treatment at the scene.

Diestler is in Lorain County Jail where he is being held without bond pending an appearance in court.
