LORAIN, Ohio — A man is charged with brutally beating and severely neglecting his 70-year-old disabled mother, including breaking her bones, starving her and forcing her to sit in her own feces and urine, according to police.
Steven Whitman, 51, was arrested Monday evening after police said he brutally beat and severely neglected his mother, Janet Whitman, inside their apartment on Delaware Avenue in Lorain.
“I was pretty horrified. I couldn’t believe it was that bad,” neighbor Richard Robinson said. He reported the suspected abuse to police after he heard a man screaming and yelling at someone next door, making threats so vile and vulgar that we cannot repeat them.
“Pretty bad, pretty vulgar,” Robinson said.
Inside the Whitmans’ apartment, police officers discovered a horrifying and sad scene.
According to the police report Janet Whitman was sitting in an arm chair, bruised and injured, unable to move or speak, covered in urine, feces and food.
The officer wrote in the report, “In 20 plus years as a Lorain Police Officer, I can’t remember smelling an odor that bad… I would estimate her weight at 70lbs.”
The officer also wrote “She had an obvious broken left arm. The bone was almost out of the skin.”
Police said doctors at the hospital discovered she has a broken or dislocated hip along with bedsores all over her body.
“I have called multiple times. I’ve called the police but by the time the police get there it’s calm. I have called, I’m not sure what it’s called, but, like, the department of aging, and they basically have said there is nothing they can do,” said a female neighbor who did not want to be identified.
“I didn’t even know she was there because we hadn’t seen her in a long period of time. We thought it was just him living there,” neighbor Terri Ceol said.
Robinson said he moved next door a few months ago.
He, too, did not know the elderly woman lived there.
But, he said, he often heard Steven Whitman yelling at someone.
“I regret not calling sooner but I’m glad was able to make sure the police could handle it in the right way,” Robinson said, adding he is glad Janet is getting the medical care she needs.
Steven Whitman is being held on $100,000 bond at the Lorain County Jail.
He is due back in court on November 29th.
