NEWBURGH HEIGHTS – Only Fox 8 cameras rolling Tuesday as a police officer gets justice for a crash that injured him and totaled his cruiser.

Officer Shawn Finch was injured during a December 2014 crash on 77. Finch was attempting to pull over a speeder, when a drunk driver in a pick-up truck crashed into the side of his cruiser.

Finch and the driver that crashed into his car, were injured. The cruiser totaled.

On Tuesday, in Garfield Heights Municipal Court, officer Finch got the chance to confront the driver that hit him, Salvatore Calo.

“December 12 is a day I will never forget,” Finch said. “I almost didn’t make it home that night. Mr. Calo, I understand everyone makes mistakes but you choosing to drive impaired, that almost killed me.”

Calo apologized to Finch, after pleading no contest to an OVI charge.

“I will never drink again,” Calo said.

Garfield Heights Municipal Judge Jennifer Weiler sentenced Cal to six months in jail. She also suspended his driver’s license for three years.
