EATON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A 17-year-old Midview High School student was killed, and another was seriously hurt early Sunday in a crash after prom.
It happened at just after 3 a.m. in Eaton Township.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Chase Elliot Johnson, 18, of Grafton, was driving a gold 2004 Saturn Ion west on state Route 82, when he entered the grassy median at the intersection of state Route 57, hitting two utility poles. His car then came to rest in the median.
Lindsey Mae Rotuno, 17, of Grafton was a passenger in the vehicle.
Rotuno was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash and was killed.
Johnson was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash and was seriously injured. He is still in the hospital.
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. Drug use by Johnson is suspected as a factor in the crash.
Midview High School released the following statement Sunday regarding the crash:
“After prom on Saturday a tragedy struck the Midview community. One of our Midview High School students sadly passed away in a car accident while another is still hospitalized. The Midview administration and board of education extends our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of this student and are praying for a full recovery for the other. The district will have counselors available at both the middle school and high school on Monday and throughout the week for students and staff if they need someone to talk to. Parents, please check with your children during this difficult time. If you think your child is struggling or needs additional help, please contact a school counselor immediately.”
The school’s volleyball team also tweeted their condolences:
Thoughts and prayers to the Rotuno family and the Midview community. Lindsey will forever be in our hearts.
