CLEVELAND– A suspected buzzed driver fell asleep behind the wheel and fell out of his moving car into rush-hour traffic on I-90 Friday morning, Cleveland police said.

The bizarre incident happened on I-90 west at East 156th Street Friday about 8 a.m.

Drivers called 911 when they witnessed the man tumble out of his car.

“A guy fell out of a car on 90 west,” a caller told a 911 dispatcher.

Jason Balanik, 38, was not hit by any of the on-coming cars, police said.

“The car, at that point, continues on, driver-less, and kind of parks itself along the median and comes to final rest without hitting anyone either,” Cleveland Police Det. Jennifer Ciaccia said.

“It was later determined that he was under the influence,” Ciaccia said.

A witness said other drivers stopped to help the man as they waited for an ambulance and police to arrive.

“But obviously, the outcome of this could have been completely devastating. He could have hit other drivers. He could have been run over himself. It’s just absolutely amazing circumstances that, I’m sure, will never be duplicated,” Ciaccia said.

Balanik was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center to be treated for injuries from the fall. He was listed in fair condition Friday evening.

Ciaccia said once Balanik is released from the hospital, police will be taking him to jail for suspected OVI.

Police said he also has a warrant for his arrest for a previous drug case.

He has at least two prior convictions for drug possession.
