CLEVELAND – A 35-year-old former Cleveland Clinic doctor has been indicted on rape charges.

Dr. Ramez Gharabawy is accused of molesting a patient at Lakewood Hospital in March.

He appeared in court Friday for a bond hearing.

The anesthesiologist also pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and gross sexual imposition.

He is accused of having sexual contact with a woman in the pre-op area of the hospital in March.

His attorney, Ian Friedman, said his client has no prior criminal problems. “Never been in trouble before,” Friedman said. “He is a good doctor and a good family man.”

Lakewood Hospital is part of the Cleveland Clinic system.

Hospital officials released the following statement on the case:

“The safety of our patients is a primary concern and we appreciate that this patient reported the incident. We reported this to the appropriate authorities and are fully cooperating with the investigation. The doctor is no longer employed by the hospital.”

Gharabawy was arrested by Lakewood police on July 2. He has been held in jail on a million dollar bond since that time.

On Friday, Friedman was able to convince the judge to reduce the bond to $500,000.

He said his client has a home in Westlake, and two children with a third on the way.

As a condition of the bond, Gharabawy will be placed on a GPS monitoring system Monday.  He also surrendered his passports to the court.

If convicted of all the charges he could face more than 20 years in prison.

A pretrial is scheduled for July 29.
