Police: DNA links rape suspect to Akron murder

AKRON, Ohio — The suspect in an October rape has also been charged in the murder of an Akron woman found dead during a house fire.

According to Akron police, Brock Andrew Tipping, 31, of Akron, faces charges of rape, abduction, felonious assault, aggravated arson and aggravated murder.

Detectives were investigating the rape of a 35-year-old Akron woman that happened on Oct. 19, 2014. The female victim was taken to an address on Sanford Avenue, where she was assaulted and raped.

She was then taken back to her home on East Tallmadge Avenue and then taken to the hospital for treatment.

Detectives obtained a DNA profile of the rape suspect and then signed warrants for Tipping’s arrest.

At the same time, they were also investigating a murder that happened on Nov. 15, 2014 in the 200 block of East Emerling Avenue. The victim, Crystal Palm, 33, was found dead of multiple stab wounds inside her apartment during a fire.

Evidence collected at the fire scene was submitted to the state crime lab. The DNA profile on the blood evidence  at that scene also came back to Tipping, according to police.

Tipping is currently in the Summit County Jail and will appear in court on Jan. 20.
