DALLAS, Texas– Dallas Police Officer Patrick Zamarripa, 32, a father of two, was one of the five officers killed by a sniper Thursday night, according to social media posts from family members and reports from local media outlets.

Military records show he was a U.S. Navy veteran who had been deployed to Bahrain as part of the Iraq War effort.

His brother shared a photo on Twitter with the caption: “Love you brother. Couldn’t be prouder. We’ll see you again. #PrayForDallas.”

Patrick’s father, Rick, told The Washington Post that he texted his son as soon as he learned about the shootings. “Hey Patrick. Are you okay?”

Rick said he reached out to his son in the past, asking him that question,  and Patrick’s response would usually come back right away, with him saying he would call his dad back.

But, this time, Rick told The Washington Post, “I didn’t hear nothing.”

Patrick’s family said his life was one devoted to serving others, and he joined the Dallas Police Department about five years ago.
