EUCLID, Ohio (WJW) — Several crews on Monday battled flames in a Euclid warehouse that stores a large amount of magnesium.

It started just before 3 a.m. at Magnesium USA on Rockwell Drive, according to the Euclid Fire Department.

The Chagrin Southeast Regional Hazmat Response Team responded to the scene and warned EFD personnel against using water for extinguishment, EFD said.

Officials say the fire was found burning inside a large sealed oven containing between four and twelve billets of magnesium. A sprinkler system kept the large oven cool but the water didn’t make contact with the magnesium burning inside.

Crews were able to remove combustibles and explosives from around the oven, including several acetylene tanks.

Runoff from the sprinkler system was contained, and there is “no threat to the environment or to businesses and homes in the immediate vicinity” officials say.

There are no reports of injuries. An evacuation of the area was not been issued.
