BERLIN (CNN)- Former Nazi death camp guard John Demjanjuk, who was sentenced to five years in prison last year for accessory to murder, has died in Germany, a police spokesman said Saturday.

Demjanjuk, of Seven Hills, was extradited to Germany for trial back in 2009 where he was found guilty of being an accessory to murder as a death camp guard.

Demjanjuk was found guilty of more than 28,000 counts of accessory to murder.

The Cleveland-area auto worker was convicted of being a guard at a Nazi death camp, even though he maintained his innocence for more than three decades.

His conviction helped set a German legal precedent, being the first time someone was convicted solely on the basis of serving as a camp guard, with no evidence of being involved in a specific killing.

Demjanjuk maintained that he was a victim of the Nazis himself, according to Fox News, first wounded as a Soviet soldier fighting German forces, then captured and held as a prisoner of war.

Demjanjuk was removed by U.S. immigration agents from his Seven Hills home and deported in May of 2009.

He was a mechanic at Ford's Brook Park engine plant and fathered three children with his wife.

Demjanjuk died in a rest home waiting for his appeal.

John Demjanjuk was 91.

U.S. Attorney Steven Dettelbach said in a statement: "This marks the end of a decades-long effort in multiple countries that ultimately established the truth about John Demjanjuk's Holocaust crimes.  There is no judicial or natural outcome that can erase the acts of Nazi persecution. Over the past three decades, the Justice Department has sought to identify and remove those individuals who denied so many the lives they themselves enjoyed, and give voice to those who were silenced."
