COLUMBUS, OH - A Columbus police officer is in surgery after being shot during an overnight standoff.

Police say that the officer was shot inside an apartment complex in the area of North High Street and West California Avenue early Sunday morning. It began when officers went after a wanted man inside a building there. He opened fire and barricaded himself inside the apartment, then set it on fire.

Firefighters couldn't immediately move in because of the heavy smoke and flames. Eventually, SWAT team members were able to enter the building and arrest the suspect.

The injured officer was taken to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and is undergoing surgery.
