TORONTO– The Indians spotted the Blue Jays a 4-run lead and roared back within one run, only to drop a 5-4 decision to the home club at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.
Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the third on a Nick Swisher RBI single to right field, but the Blue Jays tied the game in the home half of the 4th inning. Melky Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 1-1 game.
Toronto pulled ahead by four runs with a solo homer by Juan Francisco in the 5th and a 2-run double by Adam Lind in the 6th, followed by a Francisco double to plate the 5th run.
Cleveland got within one run, 5-4, with 3 runs in the 7th inning.
Lonnie Chisenhall was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 5-2. Michael Bourn singled to drive in David Murphy to make it 5-3 and Nick Swisher hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4, but that’s as close as things got.
Cleveland had a chance to tie the game in the 8th but Carlos Santana was stopped at the plate trying to score from second on a Yan Gomes single to left.
Justin Masterson got the loss and R.A. Dickey got the win for the Blue Jays.
Game two of the series is Wednesday night in Toronto.
