CLEVELAND – The Cleveland City Council gave the ‘green light’ to more than double the number of red light and speed cameras in the city.
Right now there are 23. Monday night, council members voted to install 26 more.
The cameras snap photos of cars that run red lights or speed and a ticket is mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner.
According to the mayor’s office, in 2012, the cameras brought in nearly six million dollars, about one-percent of the city’s annual budget.
“We are really trying to use those cameras to really improve safety around our community,” said council member Tony Brancatelli, who voted in favor of them.
“Now they’ve become these revenue-producing items and that’s not fair to the citizens that I represent, nor the citizens who come through the city of Cleveland,” said council member Zack Reed, who voted against them.
Most of the new cameras will be installed on the city’s east side, several within a few blocks of each other.
For example, if you are speeding down Superior Avenue at E. 124th Street, you will get one ticket, and if you run the red light down Superior Avenue at E. 105th you will get ticket number two.
Business owner Conrad Baltley likes the fact the traffic cameras are also surveillance cameras.
“It films other things going on in the neighborhood,” Baltley said.
Traffic tickets from the camera range from $100 to $200.
“They are putting them in place where I feel it’s more poverty-stricken. And so, they can take it somewhere else and get some money if they want some, because ain’t nobody got no money down here,” said a man mowing a lawn on Superior Avenue near E. 124th Street.
Drivers will have a 30-day warning once the cameras are installed.
The new camera locations include Woodland Avenue at East 55th Street, Harvard Avenue at Lee Road, Orange Avenue at East 30th Street, Chester Avenue at East 105th Street, St. Clair Avenue at East 152nd Street, Kinsman Road at East 93rd Street. Lee Road at Miles Road, Stokes Boulevard at Cedar Avenue, West 25th Street at Clark Avenue, West 65th Street at Clark Avenue, I-490 at East 55th Street, Pearl Road at Denison Avenue, and Broadview Road at Brookpark Road.
