CLEVELAND, Ohio — The city of Cleveland is expecting tens of thousands of visitors for a weekend that’s jam-packed with entertainment.
Over the next 48 hours, the Horseshoe Casino will kick off its first full-operating weekend, the Tribe will host the Marlins three days in a row and thousands of runners taking part in the Cleveland Marathon will converge on downtown city streets.
It’s an economic boost that could spark a much-needed revival for the local economy. Taxi drivers like Jimmy Wright are already noticing an increase in traffic.
“This has been an economic shot in the arm for this city. It’s been so needed for the past ten years,” said Wright. “I expect it to be very busy this weekend.”
Friday afternoon, at least six hotels in downtown Cleveland were already sold out for Saturday night.
Horseshoe Casino assistant general manager Brad Hirsch would not reveal how many people will be allowed into the casino over the weekend, but he said the goal is to provide customers with a comfortable gaming experience.
“If we do get full, the lines have been moving quickly into the casino,” said Hirsch.
If you’re not interested in gambling, you can always check out the new Frank Sinatra musical “Come Fly Away” at Playhouse Square on Saturday and Sunday.
“You got the Cleveland International Tattoo happening at Public Hall on Saturday, the Asian Festival and the Case Western Reserve commencement on Sunday,” said Lexi Hotchkiss with Positively Cleveland. “Rough projections tell us 160,000 folks will be coming downtown and to University Circle this weekend. The economic impact is exponential.”
If you’re heading downtown, give yourself plenty of time to find a parking spot.
