CLEVELAND-Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said 71 people were arrested Saturday night just hours after the verdict was announced in the case against Cleveland officer Michael Brelo.

Cleveland police officer Michael Brelo was found not guilty on all charges in connection with his role in the deadly 2012 police chase.

Brelo had been charged with two counts of voluntary manslaughter in the deaths of Malissa Williams and Timothy Russell.

Chief Williams said during a news conference Sunday morning, of those arrested 39 of them were men, 16 women and some juveniles.

According to Chief Williams, while the protesters started out peaceful Saturday, the situation turned more aggressive as the afternoon/evening went on.

During the protest along East 4th and Huron, a protestor hit a person dining at a restaurant with a sign. The suspect was arrested, along with three others when they tried to interfere with police.

Some of the demonstrators blocked Route 2, which is extremely dangerous for them and drivers. At one point, they entered Tower City Center and police were able to get them to leave. Tower City businesses were impacted by the protesters, forcing businesses to close as a precaution.

Chief Williams said the protest continued to East 9th and Euclid Saturday night, where protestors sprayed patrons with pepper spray. Bystanders were later attacked at East 4th and Huron Rd and that is when officers disbanded the protest.

Of the arrests made Saturday, the charges range from felonious assault, aggravated rioting, unlawful congregating and failure to disperse.

Cleveland police stressed they will not tolerate activities that cross the line.
