EUCLID, Ohio  - A Cleveland Councilman has turned to the I-Team demanding action after a Fox 8 report showed a suburban police chase into Cleveland ending in a crash.

Councilman Mike Polensek said the same thing has happened too many times for too many years. Police from suburban departments chase suspects into the city’s northeast side, and time and again those chases end in crashes.

Polensek wants a meeting with suburban police leaders, even some in Lake County, and he wants suburban officers to follow the same chase policies as Cleveland officers do.

Polensek said he’s complained about this for years, and he shared with the I-Team memos he’s written over the years all the way back to 2007.

He told Fox 8, “You cannot have this stuff going on today, it’s pure insanity.” And he added, “Look at the number of cases where cars have been hit, houses have been hit, whole sections of power taken down.”

Cleveland Police bosses often call off chases even after violent crimes. Fallout from a massive chase that turned deadly.

Earlier this week, Euclid Police told Fox 8, their officers have continued chasing suspects since often those criminals are carrying guns or drugs, or they’re wanted for other crimes. Lt. Mitch Houser said, “We do have that sacred duty to the public, but the balancing act of jeopardy versus protecting them is something that always has to be considered.”

An email shows Cleveland’s Safety Director and police chief recently discussed this with the Cuyahoga County Police Chief’s Association, but Polensek isn’t satisfied. He said, “Don’t tell me that I have to wait for some suburban committee to tell me the pursuit policy in the city of Cleveland. Unacceptable.”

Polensek has also sent a letter to Euclid’s mayor with his concerns.
