CLEVELAND– Cleveland City Council is considering a sweeping change in laws governing smoking and tobacco products in the city.

A panel presentation was given Monday before the Health and Human Services Committee.

Several issues are on the table.

First, the city is looking at following Cleveland Clinic’s example of not hiring people who smoke.

Next, they are considering raising the legal age to smoke or buy tobacco products to 21.  They also want to restrict the sale of flavored tobacco products to tobacco stores only, effectively removing them from convenience stores.

There is also legislation on the table to regulate Hookah lounges.

Council is creating a work group with an effort to create legislation to present to the full council by Dec. 7.
