AVON, Ohio — The North Ridgeville police chief’s wife had a court date Thursday on a misdemeanor theft charge.

Elaine Freeman’s lawyer faxed in a plea of not guilty on her behalf.

She was arrested at Kohl’s in Avon around 11:30 a.m. Monday. She was with her child at the time.

Chief Mike Freeman says the matter is a “personal family issue” that he is working on with his wife.

North Ridgeville Mayor David Gillock says Elaine Freeman’s arrest will not impact her husband’s job.  He says the chief is doing a good job.

Avon police say Freeman was cooperative and was released after being processed.  According to reports, she took several clothing items and a wall decoration.

This was Elaine Freeman’s second arrest.

She was arrested last November for a similar charge at the Target in Avon.

A pretrial date in the most recent case has been requested.
