EAST CLEVELAND Ohio (WJW ) — Cleveland police have arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection to a police chase that ended in a deadly crash.
According to the department, he and another suspect are accused of carjacking a woman at gunpoint in the Target parking lot off West 117th around 3:20 p.m. Friday. She was not hurt.
An off-duty police officer had witnessed the crime and trailed the car.
A second district supervisor then engaged in a pursuit, which continued onto I-90 E and went into East Cleveland. The vehicle then crashed near Euclid Avenue and Knowles Street, killing a 13-year-old Tamia Chappman, who was in the area.
The East Cleveland School District issued a statement mourning her loss.
“It is with our deepest regret to inform you that one of our students was killed this afternoon. Tamia Chappman was a 6th grade student that attended Superior Elementary School. Although today is the beginning of the winter break, The East Cleveland School District will offer counseling and support for students and staff on Monday at Superior Elementary School.”
Police said a gun was confiscated from the scene. A second suspect fled on foot.
A source tells the I-TEAM the deadly chase was one of three chases within an hour; the other two were East Cleveland into Cleveland.
