CLEVELAND-- Convicted rapist and kidnapper Ariel Castro confessed to investigators shortly after his arrest in May.

Today, part of that four-hour videotaped confession aired on national television.

Castro told police detectives that he actually thought he would have been caught sooner.

He said he should have been seen on video surveillance cameras near Gina DeJesus’s school shortly before he kidnapped her.

Castro plead guilty in July to hundreds of charges for kidnapping and raping three women: Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight.

The three were held captive for about 10 years. They escaped May 6.

In August, Castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years.

But he didn’t last long in prison. He was found hanging in his prison cell Tuesday evening.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and prison officials are investigating Castro's death.

He was not on suicide watch.

Police found a suicide letter in his house that he had written in 2004. Investigators asked him during his interview about suicide.

“And what about suicide? You still?” a detective asked.

Castro responded that he just wanted to “crash through that window.”

The 53-year-old former school bus driver also said he spoke to Amanda Berry’s mother after he had kidnapped her daughter.

“I think I said something, that I have her daughter and that she is okay and that she’s my wife, something like that, you know, probably not the exact words,” Castro told detectives.

When asked what Berry’s mother said in response, Castro said he hung up and the two did not have a conversation.

FOX 8 has requested a copy of the videotape as well as other evidence collected in the case from the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, but have not yet received the information.
