MENTOR-ON-THE-LAKE, Ohio– A man driving to walk his dogs lost control of his car Tuesday morning.

Mentor-on-the-Lake police said the 79-year-old was turning at Reynolds and Salida roads when he crashed through a fence. The car went through Lake Overlook Beach Park, over an embankment and onto the frozen beach.

The elderly man flagged down a service department employee and told him his car wouldn’t start. But the worker couldn’t see the vehicle with the dogs still inside.

The man was taken to Lake Health West Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. The dogs were not hurt and returned to their owner, while the car was towed from the beach.

Mentor-on-the-Lake police said the driver was cited for failure to control and will have to take another test before driving again.
