CANTON, Ohio- A Canton school will be closed on Friday after several students were sent home with heat-related issues this week.

Heritage Christian School uses the old Lincoln High School building on 6th Street Southwest. It was built in the 1920s and temperatures have reached 95 degrees on the upper floors, principal Karla Robinson said.

School officials have sent between five and six students home from school each day with heat-related illnesses. Robinson said some classrooms have as many as 10 fans running and teachers are taking kids outside for periods to cool down.

Administrator Sharla Elton said since calamity days are calculated by hours and Heritage Christian has longer school days than most public schools, they have plenty of time to use.

The school is also closed Monday for Labor Day, giving kids a four-day weekend.

There are about 375 students at Heritage Christian School in grades preschool through 12th.
