The Phone Ambulance is making house calls and it’s saving greater Clevelanders hundreds of dollars on cell phone repairs.

Company owner Tom Jenkins told Fox 8 News he has seen all manner of cellular crisis.

“Phones that have been ran [sic] over by a fire truck, phones that have been bitten by a dog, phones that have been thrown into a pool…” he said, ticking off the various reasons customers have given for the condition of their cell phones.

“I wished we could say we saved them all,” he told Fox 8’s Call For Action Reporter Lorrie Taylor on the day she followed him around northeast Ohio.

After waiting on several customers at his Mayfield Road shop in Mayfield Heights, Jenkins made a house call to the home of Trisha Thompson, a working mom from Reminderville who dropped her iPhone and shattered its screen.

“The store I bought it at wanted over $400 to replace it,” said Thompson, explaining why she’d been living with a shattered screen for weeks.  She told Taylor she also contacted the manufacturer about a replacement but was told she only qualified for a refurbished phone at a price of $200.

Jenkins said his number one source of business is the shattered iPhone screen, number two is water.

“Water does not kill phones, people are under the misconception you can put it in a bag of rice and that’ll do the trick, it doesn’t,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins told Taylor he and his crew can fix most phones.  Typical repair costs run between $49 and $65 dollars.

He and his able-bodied assistant spent ten minutes at the end of Thompson’s driveway working on her phone.  It was good as new and it only cost the Reminderville mom $65 plus a $20 fee for the house call.

“I think this is great,” she said, beaming with gratitude for the house call.  “That’s why it’s done, otherwise it wouldn’t be done, it would still be crackling every time I held it up to my ear.”

The best endorsement Jenkins could have received at the end of his house call?  Thompson’s phone began ringing as she thanked him for his work.
