There are more than 80,000 job listings in the State of Ohio.  Your chances of landing one are better if you have experience with information technology.

Darnell Thomas, 24, from Cleveland is certain the road to success can be found along the information superhighway.

He also has no doubt he’ll be cashing in as soon as he receives his degree in interactive media from Cuyahoga Community College.  He’s currently enrolled in a web design class.

“Seventy, 80K, I’m okay with that,” laughed Thomas while sharing his expectations of what the future holds for him in the IT sector.

Close to a thousand jobs posted within a thirty minute drive of Cleveland advertise various jobs related to the field of information technology.

“Cleveland’s got a much bigger web industry than many people know,” said Al Wasco, an assistant professor of visual communication and design at Tri-C.  He insists there’s a real demand for job candidates with  knowledge of IT.

He teaches Thomas’ class in web design, a specialty Wasco said doesn’t require a background in math or science.

Wasco told Fox 8 creativity and a serious work ethic are the most important qualifications a job candidate in web design can possess.

“So if you’re willing to work hard, you can pay attention to detail,  you have some design sense, you like to work  with design, and you enjoy working with information and making information understandable, probably, you’re going to be good,” said Wasco.

How good?  He told Fox 8 his top two or three web design students typically have job offers before they ever graduate. The average starting pay is usually in the $30,000 range.

Not quite what Thomas envisioned but he’s not discouraged.  Thomas believes we all make our own opportunities.

“If it’s something that you’re so passionate about it’s going to be something you’re going to launch into it, you’re going to give it your all, you’re going to make something happen with it,” he said with a confident smile on his face.
