BUCYRUS, Ohio — A Bucyrus High School student has died after a freak accident during a basketball game with friends.

Noah Lear, 16, a junior, passed away early Wednesday morning.

“The loss of life is never easy, and it’s even more difficult when it’s a child,” Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said in a statement on the Bucyrus City School District’s website. “As the father of three children, my heart goes out to Noah’s family.”

The statement says the school district informed students at the secondary school prior to classes beginning Wednesday. The Crawford County Trauma Team has been in the district since Monday to provide grief counseling to students and staff.

According to a Facebook page set up for updates on Lear, the teen was playing basketball with friends on Feb. 27. He attempted a slam dunk, when the backboard, rim and post all came down on top of him.

The Galion Inquirer reports that Lear actually called his mom, Melissa Griffin, right after the accident.

“He just said that he had an accident and his mouth was bleeding really bad and he knocked a few teeth out,” Griffin told the Inquirer. “He said the police were with him and he was being taken to the hospital.”

When he got to the hospital, Griffin said Lear was still talking, and he was actually apologizing for how sorry he was about what had happened.

“I told him he had nothing to be sorry for,” Griffin told the Inquirer.

While he was at the hospital, he had cardiac arrest twice. Part of his brain that controls his heart and blood pressure was badly damaged. He was moved to a hospice care facility over the weekend.

A post on the Facebook page Wednesday morning stated that he’d passed away:

“This is an incredibly challenging time for our students and staff,” Secondary School Principal Mark Burke said in the release on the district’s website. “The Bucyrus City School District is a family, and we will do whatever is necessary to help each student and staff member deal with losing a classmate, student and friend. Noah and his family are in our thoughts and prayers.”
