CLEVELAND– The FOX 8 I-Team has obtained body camera video from Cuyahoga County sheriff’s deputies giving us the first look at the chaos as teen inmates rioted inside the Juvenile Detention Center.

The video also shows what it took for a SWAT team to finally take back control.

The teen rampage happened a couple of weeks ago, and the county just released the video to the I-Team.

A group of young prisoners took over a section of the lock-up, and you can see them trying to break glass by pounding it with metal objects. You can also see them destroying walls, trying to rip down light fixtures and more.

On the video, you can also hear young people laughing, and you can clearly see the kids enjoyed being in control.

Guards at the scene got out of there and called for help. The first deputies at the scene found themselves outnumbered.

Video shows the SWAT team gathering outside the unit and cutting out a window with a saw. We’ve learned deputies did that so the teens could hear commands. Deputies also wanted an opening in case they had to fire some kinds of chemical agent into the unit to help take control.

The SWAT unit also found a door barricaded. But once deputies made their way in, they handcuffed the teens and brought them out one-by-one.

The kids left behind $200,000 in damage taxpayers will have to pay to repair. Six inmates ages 14 and 15 are facing charges for the disturbance. Investigators found three had even tried to escape. The teens involved had already faced charges for murder and other violent crimes.

The incident led the Cuyahoga County prosecutor to call for management changes and strict control over that facility. The American Civil Liberties Union has also called for an intensive review of issues at the detention center, although the ACLU does not think the answer is simply sending the worst kids to an adult jail.

The juvenile court oversees the detention center. Since that big disturbance, the superintendent there has resigned.
