The Bluffton University community is marking the five-year anniversary of a deadly bus crash in Atlanta that killed seven people.
Family, friends, and even members of the 2007 Bluffton Baseball Team gathered on Friday around the Circle of Remembrance, a memorial built on campus for the seven victims in the crash. Five of the victims were members of the baseball team.
"The only thing today means, this is the day, this is the reason five years ago, I'm like this now," said Tim Berta, who was badly injured in the crash. He has spent the last 5 years recovering.
"Zachary was full of life. He loved baseball. It was his passion," said Estee Arend of her brother, who died in the crash.
Zachary Arend, David Betts, Scott Harmon, Cody Holp and Tyler Williams were all players on the baseball team. Their coach, James Grandy, was on the bus when he lost 5 of his players.
"It's difficult," said Grandy. "Every year, every day is a memorial service for me."
Coach Grandy says the 2007 team will always be a part of the Bluffton Baseball Program.
"Whatever successes that we have this year and in the future, this is going to be part of that story."
