BEREA, OH – The list of school districts across Northeast Ohio battling bed bugs in recent weeks continues to grow.

More and more districts are reporting them on school grounds.

The Berea City School District found a bed bug at Middleburg Heights Junior High School.

And the Elyria City School District says that bed bugs were discovered at the high school Monday.

Just last week, the Lorain City Schools reportedly had three separate bed bug incidents.

And in Bay Village, bed bugs were found at Bay High School.

Two weeks ago, a bedbug was discovered in the Canton City School District.

That same week, bed bugs were confirmed at three Parma schools, even forcing an elementary school to close.

According to the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, bed bugs usually don’t breed in a school environment. 

They like to feed off of the blood from people while they are sleeping and then hide in places like clothing.

Tuesday, the Berea City School District unleashed bedbug sniffing dogs in their search of the school.

“Our dogs pick up on the odor of the bug or live viable eggs.  The dog then scratches to alert on it and pinpoints it,” said Matt Hernandez with Nip It, a canine scent detection team.

Nip It is based in Northeast Ohio and says business has picked up in recent weeks.

Hernandez says no further bedbugs were found during the inspection.

“The district is being proactive and making sure that parts of the buses and schools free of bed bugs,” added Hernandez.
