CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri– A newborn’s life was saved after her mother was killed on the way to the hospital.
According to the Southeast Missourian, Sarah Iler and her husband were involved in a 3-vehicle crash on the way to the hospital to have their baby.
Iler died on impact, but crews performed an emergency c-section, along with CPR, to save the baby’s life.
The newborn girl, who was named Maddyson, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but according to a Go Fund Me page, she is doing better.
“Maddyson is breathing on her own, has opened her eyes, has squeezed the nurses fingers, and my mom (her grandma) got to hear her cry today….there is still a possibility of long term damage to her brain and lungs but we just have to keep praying and waiting….my thanks goes out to everyone for their selfless acts in this terrible time of tragedy and we greatly appreciate the love and support and all the prayers.”
The Go Fund Me page also says that Iler was extremely excited to become a mother for the first time. She’s being remembered as a “great friend, fun loving aunt, and a crazy cousin” and “the BEST sister you could ask for.”
The baby’s father is reportedly recovering from his injuries.
