MACEDONIA, Ohio — An autopsy is to be performed today on an 8-month-old baby left inside an SUV for hours.

The baby boy has been identified as Jayce Markell Benjamin, of Garfield Heights.

Macedonia police say the investigation is in the early stages, but that the baby was killed in what appears to be a tragic accident.

Police say four children were supposed to be dropped off at a daycare around 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, but the 8-month-old was never taken inside.

The car was driven home to Garfield Heights, and the baby was left inside.

The investigation shows that around 11 a.m., the child’s grandmother went to work at Walmart driving the same vehicle, not knowing that the baby was inside.

When the child didn’t return home from the daycare, the mother called the grandmother at work, and she found the baby unresponsive at 5:30 p.m.

“There are a lot of things taken into account with this today,” said Macedonia police Lt. Vince Yakopovic. “Based on how long the child had been there, and where the vehicle is parked. It wasn’t always parked in this lot. It was parked in a shaded area earlier.”

The baby was already dead when police arrived at Walmart.

No charges have been filed, but police say it is still early in the investigation.
