PENINSULA, Ohio — An official with Cuyahoga National Park is releasing new details after a woman was killed on the train tracks at Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Sunday.

Public Affairs Officer Mary Pat Doorley said the woman killed was Heidi Howard, 38, of Ravenna. It happened near Route 303 in Peninsula at around 3:30 p.m.

Doorley said Howard had been eating at the nearby Winking Lizard right before the incident happened. Doorley says the woman crossed the tracks and talked to a parent and a child, then was heading back across the tracks when she was hit.

There were a couple hundred passengers on the train at the time, and other people were milling about when it happened. The train was passing through the area where passengers board.

The train was traveling slowly, and the conductor was blowing the horn and yelling Howard to get off the tracks, but she didn’t move in time.

She was struck and killed instantly.

“Be always aware that when you’re around here, it is an active line,” said Doorley. “It’s not a line where you should be walking on it. We have designated crosswalks. As it is with the train. They use their horns. Anybody who’s been in the valley has heard that horn going. Just be aware and pay attention to what’s around you.”
