JEFFERSONVILLE, Ohio— Authorities say deputies were responding to a reported disturbance at a motel in Ohio when a suspect in the disturbance shot and wounded a deputy and was then fatally shot by return fire.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said in a release that the male suspect died at the scene of the shooting that occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday at the Quality Inn/Amerihost in Jeffersonville. The release said the injured deputy was in stable condition at a hospital.

The identities of the suspect who was killed and the wounded deputy weren’t immediately released Sunday.

Detectives from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Columbus and agents from the state’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating.

Jeffersonville is roughly 40 miles southwest of Columbus.
