A monster tornado claimed at least 51 lives in Oklahoma Monday.

The tornado was two miles wide, and the small town of Moore bore the brunt of the damage.

Sherry Muscato is a former Northeast Ohio woman who lives not far from the devastation. She’s from Aurora, but now lives just outside of Tulsa, about 85 miles away from Oklahoma City and the Moore area.

Muscato thought she might be in danger when the tornado first touched down, but the storm passed over her area.

In Moore, an elementary school collapsed, killing at least seven children. Dozens of other children and adults are in hospitals, some with what are being described as grotesque injuries.

“It’s heartbreaking and devastating we have to see these images on TV, and just knowing that they’re not far from where we are,” said Muscato. “It just breaks my heart to see these parents mourning for their child, and children mourning for their parents.”

“You thank God, and you pray for them and hug your kids tighter, and hug your husband tighter…and just thank God it’s not at your house,” she said.

States of emergencies are being declared in 16 Oklahoma counties.
