NORTH ROYALTON, Ohio-- Police in North Royalton are investigating an alleged attempted child abduction.

“I was on my bike and a man came up to me and rolled down his window and asked me to go home with him," said Nia Smith, 11.

She says just before 5:30 p.m. Friday, a man in a white four-door car pulled up to her and she believes tried to abduct her.

She was with her seven-year-old cousin on Gordon Drive in North Royalton.

"I just got my phone out of my pocket and told him that I would call my mom; he didn't know my cousin was with me because she was behind me and she heard everything," Smith said.

"I couldn't believe a man would do that, especially in this neighborhood that I'm in. I didn't expect someone to be pulling up to kids her age to be asking, you know, to get in the car with them, and so it was very shocking," said Nia’s mother, Tyesha Smith.

Smith said she immediately notified police who began looking for the man around the neighborhood.

"I really appreciate the help that they did to try to find the guy, but I really hope he don't try it on another child," she said.

People who live in the neighborhood were surprised to hear what happened.

"It's terrifying. I know in my neighborhood, I've always felt safe here. I walk my dog around here all the time and I know that there's children here, so just knowing that, it's scary," said neighbor Sarah Micklewright.

"He never goes anywhere without me," said neighbor Kevin Kane.

There's a couple cars sometimes that'll sit up here, up at this corner or just at the crossroads there and if we see anything unusual or somebody's up there for a long time, we'll check it out or call the police," said Micklewright.

Nia's mother said for now, she will not be allowed too far from home.

"I'm not sure if you know he might come back and try it again and so I really want them to stay in front of the house for now," said her mother.

Anyone with information should call North Royalton police.
