BURTON, Ohio — One person was killed and four other people were injured in a crash involving an SUV and an Amish buggy.

According to the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office, it happened in the 15000 block of Tavern Road late Sunday night.

Ohio State Highway Patrol officials said the buggy was carrying a family of five when an SUV hit the rear of the buggy.

A 28-year-old man in the buggy was killed, and the other victims were taken to a local hospital with injuries.

The driver of the SUV tried to leave the scene, police said, but his vehicle stopped about a half a mile down the road due to damage sustained in the crash.

Troopers said the driver of the SUV admitted to being impaired and to falling asleep right before the crash. Authorities said alcohol was a factor in the crash.

After the initial crash, a horse broke free from the buggy and was hit by another vehicle. The horse was killed, but those in the vehicle were believed to be OK.

The crash is still under investigation.
