ASHTABULA –  The  Ashtabula City council has made it illegal to brandish a replica gun that looks real.

Council passed legislation Monday night making it a crime if someone is caught pointing or brandishing a fake gun. The legislation takes effect immediately.

The city solicitor Michael Franklin says they have seen an increase in people using fake guns to commit crime.

And Ashtabula Detective William Felt told Fox 8 people brandishing a fake gun that has the orange safety tip removed can lead to the use of deadly force by police, similar to  what happened in Cleveland in November when 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot.

Felt is hoping this new legislation will help make sure that type of event won’t happen again.
