SAGAMORE HILLS, Ohio –A stand-off involving the Nordonia Hills school board president Steve Bittel has ended, and Bittel is in custody.
According to Sagamore Hills police, Bittel reportedly barricaded himself with a gun in the bathroom of his home Friday morning.
According to a statement on the Nordonia Hills City School District’s website, area schools were placed on “modified lock-down” in light of all the police activity.
It all happened after the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force along with detectives from Sagamore Hills police executed a search warrant at Bittel’s 189 Ballantrae home about 7:30 a.m. Friday.
The police department had been notified by the task force several weeks ago of “questionable material” on a computer at the home. Upon executing the search warrant, police say Bittel got to a hidden gun and barricaded himself in the master bathroom.
Police say Bittel then threatened to harm himself, and one shot was fired. No one, including Bittel, was injured.
Bittel’s wife, Patricia, was at the home when the search warrant was issued. She did leave the home before the stand-off ended.
The Summit County SWAT team responded to handle negotiations with Bittel, according to police.
Area schools were notified and are on a modified lock down, according to police, though no schools were in any danger.
The following update was posted on the district’s website following the incident:
“Today, the Nordonia Hills City School District was notified that Steve Bittel, president of our school board, was involved in a standoff with local police. Fortunately, this crisis has been resolved. Mr. Bittel is in custody and is safe. Mr. Bittel has been a member of our board for the past three years and became president this past year. In no way has this situation had an impact on our children. They are and have always been safe and not at risk.
