CHESTERLAND, Ohio - A deer has some local animal lovers to thank for a dramatic rescue that freed him from a precarious situation.

Nancy Horvath grabbed a camera as her husband, Thomas, and Geauga County game warden Scott Denamen tried to help out a trapped deer in the backyard of their home in Chesterland.

"I could see this deer with the net around his mouth and in his horns, and he had just wrapped his entire head in this stuff," said Thomas Horvath.

The animal became caught up in some netting that is used to keep balls from a nearby golf course from landing on their property.

"He would run full speed as far as he could until he ran out of net, and literally his four legs would fly up, he'd land and then he'd run the other way, and he just kept doing that back and forth, back and forth," Horvath explained.

He and Nancy credit the game warden for staying persistent, even while wrestling the young 175 pound buck in the cold mud to help get it free.

"That was my first question to Scott, you're not gonna kill him are you? and he said no, no," recalled Nancy Horvath.

"He wanted to get the guy released without harming it, I mean that was his priority. The priority wasn't to just go in there and shoot him," they added.

The Horvaths say the game warden asked them to record the rescue. They say the ordeal lasted about 45 minutes.

"He wrestled him to the ground eventually and then he was holding him down and the game warden started cutting the net from around his antlers and from around his face," said Nancy Horvath.

"The animal set up, looked around, stood up...boom, into the trees he was gone," said her husband.

The Horvaths say they see deer just about every day. As retired nurses, they say to them every life is important.

"We're concerned with life in general and both of us, whatever we can do to help, whether it's people or animals that's what we're willing to do," said Nancy.
