AKRON, Ohio -- Thousands of people ventured downtown to Akron's First Night festivities which ran from 6 p.m. until midnight.

The 17th annual event is always a family friendly, safe and alcohol free gathering.

"First Night is really a good event, just beautiful," said Mark Anthony, from Akronist.com.

This year there were two rounds of fireworks so that children wouldn't have to be out past their bedtimes.

At 9 p.m. the first round of the dazzling fireworks lit up the night sky.

There were 80 different experiences taking place throughout the downtown area with shuttles taking people back and forth to 10 different venues.

Near Lock 3 on Main Street there was ice skating, sledding, small village shops, ice carving, dancing and multiple musical groups performing on stage.

"I'm having fun," said Anna Baronayte, "It's all about the Christmas Spirit."

At midnight there was a second countdown to New Year’s Day and another round of fantastic fireworks.

Admission was $10 for adults and children got in free.
