AKRON, Ohio--- Two Akron police officers are on paid administrative after a deadly force shooting that claimed the life of an Akron man.

Just after 7 a.m. Thursday, Akron police say one of their officers tried to make a traffic stop near Coventry and Firestone Boulevard, but the man behind the wheel took off on a slow-speed chase. Police say the driver traveled around 35 mph for 3-4 minutes before he ditched the SUV and started to run through a backyard near Dietz Avenue. According to police, the suspect refused to drop his gun and an officer fired at him.

The Summit County Coroner says the driver, 35-year-old Dawayne Grant Sr., of Akron, was shot three times in the torso. His death has been ruled a homicide.

"I just heard gunshots. I looked outside and saw police cars," said neighbor Ian McFedries. "I looked in the back, in front of the garage, and there was a man on his back."

McFedries soon realized the driver got out and ran through his backyard before he was shot by police.

"I raised my children here, my grandkids come here all the time. It's been a very quiet neighborhood," said McFedries.

Police say they are not sure why Grant decided to take off. Investigators say his handgun was loaded.

Summit County court records show in 2007, Grant was indicted on numerous charges and was later convicted of identity fraud.

"Having a gun would be something that I would never think that he would do," said Grant's long-time friend and neighbor Marisa Williams. "He lived two houses over from me. His kids come and play with my kids."

"These deadly force situations are split-second decisions," said Captain Dan Zampelli. "We do not have to nor do we train our officers to wait to see whether he's going to fire a gun. If he did, we'd have seriously injured or dead officers."
