BAINBRIDGE TWP., Ohio — A 9-year-old from Northfield Center Township was killed in a crash in Bainbridge Township Monday.

According to Bainbridge Township police, it happened at just after 5 p.m. in the 8700 of East Washington Street.

A 2014 Ford pick-up truck driven by Frederick Shafer, 55, of Bainbridge Township, was traveling westbound on East Washington Street at the time.

A vehicle driven by William Varner, 44, of Northfield Center, was traveling eastbound at 8786 East Washington Street then turned left into a private drive in front of the truck. The two collided.

There were two passengers in Varner’s vehicle, including Carmella Karpovitch, 9.

All four involved in the crash were taken to the hospital, where Karpovitch was pronounced dead.

There is no indication of drugs or alcohol being involved. The crash is still under investigation.

Carmella was a student in Nordonia Hills City Schools. The district posted her photo on Facebook Tuesday.
