DAYTON, Ohio — Nine people in Dayton, Ohio, have been killed in the second mass shooting in the U.S. in less than 24 hours, and the suspected shooter is also deceased, police said.

Here are the names of the victims.

Dayton police tweeted that an active shooter situation began in the Oregon District at 1 a.m. Sunday, but that officers nearby were able to “put an end to it quickly.” Mayor Nan Whaley said officers shot the suspect within 60 seconds.

Within that 60 seconds, the suspect killed 9 people and injured 27.

All of the fatalities happened outside, police say.

26 people have been injured, according to Dayton police.

Police identified the gunman as 24-year-old Connor Betts. He was killed by police.

FBI and local law enforcement authorities have served a search warrant at the shooter’s family home in Bellbrook.

The shooting happened as the suspect was making his way toward a bar called Ned Peppers, Montgomery County Emergency Services spokeswoman Deb Decker said.

The shooter wore body armor, Decker said. In a press conference Sunday morning, police said the suspect had a .223 rifle with a high capacity magazine and had additional ammo.

The Oregon District is a historic neighborhood near downtown Dayton that’s home to entertainment options, including bars, restaurants and theaters.

The district will reopen Sunday afternoon.

The FBI is assisting with the investigation.

“Dayton has gone through a really tough year,” Mayor Nan Whaley said. Dayton was hit by 14 tornadoes in May.

One of these issues is preventable, Whaley said. “When is enough enough?”

The community will hold a vigil at 8 p.m. for the victims.

The Ohio shooting came hours after a young man opened fire in a crowded El Paso, Texas, shopping area, leaving 20 dead and more than two dozen injured. Just days before, on July 28, a 19-year-old shot and killed three people, including two children, at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California.
